Lagos Island

Historic streets, markets, civic landmarks and cultural sites at the old commercial core of the city.

Lagos Island contains some of the city’s most important historic and commercial districts. Broad Street, Onikan, Marina and nearby market areas each offer a different experience, from civic architecture and museums to dense trading streets.

What to see

Freedom Park provides a useful point of entry into the history of the former Broad Street Prison and the area’s current cultural life. Onikan and surrounding districts also connect several museums, performance spaces and heritage sites.

Visit with a plan

Lagos Island is best approached with a specific route. Markets can be crowded, roads can change direction, and parking may be limited. Keep valuables secure, use a reliable map, and avoid trying to cover the entire area in one short visit.

Combine the area with the Lagos art and culture guide or a carefully timed stop in nearby Ikoyi or Victoria Island.
